Rare Antique Gold Pencil with Turquoise Button
Rare Antique Gold Pencil with Turquoise Button
This is a sleek pencil holder made for a flat carpenter's pencil. The current pencil is most likely the original but can be replaced with most new carpenter's pencils. The gold case is marked as 18K yellow gold and is hallmarked from London in 1912.
The creator, S. Mordan and Co. was the most prolific manufacturer of the mechanical pencil - they virtually invented the mechanical pencil. Sampson Mordan was born in 1790 and died in 1843. He was a silversmith and a co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil. During his youth, he was an apprentice of the inventor and locksmith Joseph Bramah, who patented the first elastic ink reservoir for a fountain pen. This gold pencil is marked "S.Mordan & Co." It can be worn on a medium-length chain on its own or with other items.
The pencil has wear consistent with the age, including a few dents on the case, but the slide is in phenomenal condition as well as the turquoise. This is a rare collectible item.
This pencil would be a unique gift for anyone who needs their writing instrument handy. This gold pencil case can be worn alone as a pendant, or used off the chain every day. The chain is not included, but I will be happy to supply the chain of your choice.
